About Opportunity
@Work

Our Mission
Our mission is to rewire the U.S. labor market so STARs—workers Skilled Through Alternative Routes—can regain upward mobility, enriching their careers and communities. Over the next decade, we aim to enable this for 1 million STARs by opening up 10 million jobs, boosting STARs' earnings by more than $100 billion.
Our Vision
We envision a labor market where the skills you have matter more than where you got them. When skills are recognized and rewarded, all Americans can work, learn, and earn to their full potential.
Our History
Our journey began in 2015 at the White House, where co-founder Byron Auguste launched TechHire to connect overlooked communities with the tech economy. This vision was first nurtured within New America, acting as a civic enterprise until Opportunity@Work matured into an independent 501(c)(3) in 2016.
This transition marked our evolution from a specialized initiative into a national nonprofit dedicated to a dual mission: testing scalable, tech-driven interventions and leading a movement to ensure every individual can contribute their talents to a modern labor market.

Our values
Meet our team
We celebrate the dignity of all work and the dignity of every worker—especially those with overlooked skills.
Our people are passionate and driven, with experience, skills, and life journeys as unique as the STARs we serve. We’re looking for individuals who believe in building a labor market that’s more inclusive of STARs and want to stretch their professional skills in a collaborative, diverse, and dynamic environment.
